Drag Racing Returns to Its Santa Barbara Roots

March 8th, 2019

For The First Time In 70 Years

Santa Barbara in the late 1940s was a nursing ground for a lively hot-rod scene. Hot-rodding became a source of family entertainment and Santa Barbara and Carpinteria could not get enough. For the first time in 70 years, Santa Barbara will be hosting a drag racing event. For a quaint seaside community, this qualifies as a very big deal.

Hosted by Santa Barbara Drags, a west coast spinoff of The Race of Gentlemen (TROG) that pays homage to the old days of classic hot-rodding, the event begins on Friday March 8 until Saturday 9. The course is short, roughly 1/8-mile along West and East beach on Cabrillo Boulevard.

The rules are strict, car bodies must be 1934 or older, and the engines must be American-made. Given their vintage, it’s doubtful any of the cars or bikes will go much faster than 60-65 miles per hour. But it’s not about the speed, it’s about camaraderie.
