Historic Summerland

Origin of Summerland

Just south of east of Montecito lies the tiny beach community of Summerland. Known for its breathtaking views, vintage antique stores, and welcoming coffee shops, this intimate seaside community is home to approximately 2,000 residents. Originally Summerland was founded by H.L Williams, a spiritualist, who owned an expansive estate on an ocean-view hillside.

Williams eventually divided up his land into smaller parcels and sold them to fellow field leading spiritualists. One of these spiritualists happened to be J.S Loveland, a well-known author in the Summerland area. Loveland often wrote news articles for “The Reconstructor”, one of Summerland’s first newspapers. His parcel, now known as 226 Ortega Ridge Road, sits on top of Ortega Hill and overlooks the gorgeous Pacific Ocean. Loveland’s hill-top home is still standing today, with the original wood floors, carved staircase banister, sash windows and doors, and period hardware. 226 Ortega Ridge Road has been recently and tastefully transformed for chic, modern living, with luxury amenities blended with the historic charm. This 3-bedroom, 3 bath home has sweeping views of the ocean and mountains from nearly every room, 3 bedrooms, 2 full and one half bathroom, a large upstairs balcony, and sits on a sprawling, sun-filled half acre.
